Greetings from the Chair of the Division of Music and Performing Arts , Dr. Kristyn Kuhlman

Welcome to the Music Department at Roberts Wesleyan College.

I am proud to be the Chair of a Division that is dedicated to preparing students to succeed and serve by providing programs of high quality in an atmosphere that expresses a Christian worldview. Allow me to share just a few of the reasons why I recently chose to come to Roberts Wesleyan College and why I hope you will consider joining us.

First, our number of full-time faculty is comparable to that of many larger universities, making our student-faculty ratio very favorable. Our highly-qualified faculty are committed to infusing spiritual development with knowledge in an academic environment that allows you to reach your maximum potential as student, musician, and teacher. Our commitment to you as a musician means that, at Roberts, you will study your major performance area with a teacher who is an expert in that area. Our applied faculty maintain active performance schedules, performing in the local Rochester area as well as across the country and internationally. Many are members of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, a full-time professional orchestra who regularly perform in our own Cultural Life Center.

Secondly, we offer Bachelor of Science degrees in Music Education and Music Performance as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Music. In 2005, we introduced our new Masters degree in Music Education. Our programs are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music. We are very excited about our jazz and theater minors—students in all performance areas have the opportunity to study jazz improvisation and participate in our Big Band and Jazz Combos. A wide variety of ensembles mean that you have the opportunity to perform as much as you desire. Our ensembles perform at a high level, exemplified by the orchestra’s current programming of Hindemith’s Symphonic Metamorphosis.

Finally, the graduates of our music department go on to successful careers in public school and private studio teaching. Others continue their studies at prominent conservatories and graduate schools of music. Currently, Roberts graduates can be found studying opera at the University of Michigan, conducting at the New England Conservatory, and trumpet performance at Northwestern.

We hope you will consider becoming part of our friendly, supportive community. The quality of our faculty and students complements their desire to reflect a Christ-like character including love, self-sacrifice, compassion, grace, honesty, and integrity.
