Pace Institute Piano Teacher's Workshop

Workshops

Level I - July 7-11

  • Focus is on how to sequentially teach level I repertoire, technique, theory, ear training, sight reading, transposition and improvisation based on 5 finger positions.
  • Musical content is based on the Robert Pace Method books which includes:
    • All major and minor keys, blues scales, pentatonic and dorian mode
    • I and V7 chords, blues and rock progressions
    • Ensemble literature, recital pieces
  • Visual aids for teaching key signatures, notes, rhythms, intervals, chords and other musical concepts will be created
  • Instruction is put into the context of private, dyad, group and keyboard labs and lessons.

Optional Piano Master class meets daily covering appropriate repertoire for Levels III and IV may be available. (Piano Master class limited to 4-6 students)

Level II - July 14-18

  • The same format as level I only expanded from 5 finger positions to 1 octave scales—major, minor, modal and blues
  • Solo and ensemble repertoire that develop a conceptual understanding of music will be emphasized
  • Improvisation and composition is a part of every session
  • Theoretically, the following musical concepts are added; the IV chord, diminished triads, major and minor intervals 16th note rhythms and more.

Optional Piano Master class meets daily covering appropriate repertoire for Levels III and IV may be available. (Piano Master class limited to 4-6 students)

The overall goal of both levels is to have students not just read notes, but develop
“eyes that hear and ears that see.”
