Study Groups and Supplementary Instruction

Study Groups.  You can take advantage of our regularly scheduled peer led study groups for a number of courses. Our study group leaders are students who have achieved high grades in the selected course itself and are chosen for their friendly ability to relate to students and facilitate collaborative study.  Group leaders do not re-teach the class, they do not re-lecture. Group leaders help group members manipulate the course content in new ways among each other and encourage students to help themselves and each other.  Study groups provide a focused study time with other students equally interested in succeeding in the course.

Study Groups are formed for classes such as:

      • Principles of Chemistry
      • Organic Chemistry
      • General Biology
      • Elementary Statistics
      • Descriptive Astronomy

Supplementary Instruction (SI) is similar to study groups in many ways, but goes a measure further.  SI sessions are attached to “traditionally difficult” courses that students consistently need support in.  SI leaders not only have earned high grades in these courses, but have taken those courses from the same instructor the SI is formed for.  SI leaders are required to attend the selected course along with the students of the group. This helps the SI Leader to maintain a very tight relationship with the course’s specific content and requirements during each successive semester. The SI leader does not re-teach material, but is an expert student in how to succeed in the course itself.  Extensive and continuous research strongly indicates that students who participate in SI sessions perform significantly better in these difficult courses than students who do not participate.

SI Groups have been formed for classes such as:

      • Western Civilization I & II
      • Introduction to Communication Arts
      • Human Anatomy & Physiology
