The Mathematics Department at Roberts Wesleyan College offers programs to support a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Mathematics, Bachelor of Science (BS) in Mathematics, and Adolescence and Middle Childhood Teacher Education in Mathematics 5-12 (BS). The department also offers a mathematics concentration for the Inclusive Childhood Teacher Education degree. With appropriate background and education courses, students may teach mathematics at the elementary, middle, or secondary education levels.

The mathematics majors prepare students for mathematics-related careers in business, industry and government services. They also provide excellent preparation for students interested in pursuing graduate studies in areas such as pure or applied mathematics, business, business administration and computer or actuarial sciences.

Requirements for a mathematics major at Roberts are 30 semester hours of mathematics, two or three Physics courses and one course in computer science. The size of the major allows students to pursue other areas of interest such as computer science, business, or any of the sciences.

Program Distinctives

The mathematics program at Roberts Wesleyan provides a flexible curriculum that is tailored to meet the individual needs of students. Students are challenged to understand both the theoretical and applied aspects of mathematics and to see connections to other disciplines. All math majors take a common core of courses – Calculus I, II, III, Introduction to Advanced Mathematics, and Linear Algebra. The remainder of a student’s major is selected from among electives in algebra, analysis, history of mathematics, geometry, probability and statistics, and applied mathematics. Faculty members advise students in selecting courses that will best fit their interests and future goals, and provide the opportunity for directed and independent studies when appropriate.

Students and faculty use a variety of technological resources in mathematics, including current versions of computer algebra, statistics, and dynamic geometry software. Direct, personal communication is supplemented by email, public folders, and web pages.

Students gain practical experience and income by serving as tutors, teaching assistants, and Supplemental Instruction group leaders.

Roberts’ location in the Rochester area provides numerous opportunities. Optional cross registration in advanced mathematics courses is available at no additional cost at other Rochester-area colleges, providing both breadth and depth for a student’s program. In addition, internship opportunities are available in a wide variety of settings.

Faculty members encourage students to participate in activities outside the classroom such as lectures, mathematical contests, attendance and presentations at professional meetings, the Math-Science Club, and other extra-curricular events.

 

Outcomes

In addition to teaching in public and private schools at all levels, recent alumni have attended graduate school in mathematics or statistics and worked in market research, the Bureau of the Census, financial institutions, etc.

 

Faith and Learning

“For since the creation of the world, God’s invisible qualities – his eternal power and divine nature – have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made . . .” (Romans 8:20, NIV). For centuries mathematics has been a significant tool in the scientific probe into the wonders of Creation. As we look deeper into nature with increasingly sophisticated scientific and mathematical tools, those who seek Him will catch glimpses of God. Even in the abstractions of mathematics we glimpse God. For example, His transcendence and immanence may begin to reconcile in our minds as we consider the mathematically infinite and the interactions of higher dimensions.

As a tool for understanding our physical and social environment, mathematics can also play a significant role in our efforts to minister to the physical, social, emotional, mental, and spiritual needs of a world in need of Jesus.
