Master of Music

Music Education
A Part-time Program for the Full-time Teacher
This 30 credit program is designed to lead to a masters degree and Professional Certification in K-12 Music Education for holders of New York State Initial Certification in Music Education. The M.M. in Music Education reflects a vision of teaching excellence that integrates reflective practice, advanced content knowledge, instructional excellence, and ongoing personal and professional growth.
The emphasis of the program is three-fold:
Courses dealing with music education methodologies, pedagogy, and curriculum provide a practical framework from which to evaluate curricular issues and classroom procedures.
Courses in music theory, conducting, and performance allow for the practical application of enhanced musical skills.
Courses in research methods introduce students to the body of research literature in music education and equip students to independently investigate issues related to individual teaching situations.

What our students say about the program ~
"The best part of the program, for me, was the faculty. Every single professor I had brought a high level of knowledge and passion for their individual specialty, and demonstrated real life practicality for the subject matter. Their accessibility and care for each student, combined with expertise, make this a first rate music program."
"After having taught a couple of years, I started my masters in Music Education at Roberts. The professors are knowledgeable, helpful, and committed to meeting students' needs. I can honestly say that I have applied much of what I have learned in my classroom and that I am thankful that I chose Roberts."
"The M.M. program at Roberts Wesleyan College provides new music teachers with the tools to successfully establish themselves in a music classroom. The program challenges, nurtures, and expands teaching horizons, and develops in students a keen sense for lifelong learning."
"As an international student at Roberts, the M.M. program has made me feel at home by promoting social diversity, a Christian worldview, and academic competence. Skills and strategies learned through pedagogy, curriculum, and performance-based classes have enabled me to begin a career in the American education system with confidence."
"Since I began with the Masters in Music Education program at Roberts Wesleyan, I have been amazed at how welcoming and accommodating the faculty and students are. As a current teacher, it can be very difficult to balance your profession while pursuing a masters. Roberts Wesleyan offers a program that understands these needs and circumstances. They have developed a curriculum that is geared towards the needs of current teachers and still challenges them on a daily basis. I have been so happy to bring what I have learned in class back to my own students on a weekly basis!"
