David Leung is active in all aspects of performance as soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician, concertmaster and orchestral conductor.  David Leung’s solo engagements in 2009 included his recital debut at Carnegie Hall in April.  In addition to teaching, David Leung enjoys playing a wide range of chamber music.  He is the co-founder of the Helios string quartet and Felix piano trio.  David Leung is also the director and co-founder of the Eastman Camerata, a chamber ensemble at the Eastman School of Music, playing a wide range of repertoire.  Besides playing with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra regularly, Leung is also an active conductor.  David Leung began his study of orchestral conducting with Professors Neil Varon and Brad Lubman at Eastman in 2004.  Since January 2005, Mr. Leung has become the associate conductor of the Brighton Symphony Orchestra and the guest-conductor of the Auburn Chamber Orchestra.  His conducting engagements include the New Music festival in Tiffin, Ohio, where he conducted a choreographed production of Kamran Ince’s Waves of Talya with the composer’s presence.

David Leung is the recipient of many awards and scholarships, including the Bloomberg Scholarship, Investec Music Prize, Standard Chartered Community Foundation Scholarship, Guinness Flight Music Prize, Soong Ching Ling Childern’s Palace Scholarship, St. David Lodge Music Award, the Ruggiero Ricci Violin Performance Merit Award, amongst many others.

David Leung has performed in many international music festivals and summer camps, including ISOMATA in California, Asian Youth Orchestra, Shell Expo Music Summer School in Aberdeen, Scotland and Casals Festival in Prades, France.  He has also performed extensively in the violin master-classes of Joseph Silverstein, Carl Pini, William Preucil, Lawrence Lesser, Joseph Swensen, Esther Haffner, Benedict Craft, Paul Neubauer, Silvia Rosenberg, Eliot Chapo, Miriam Fried, Beth Newdome, Evgueni Gratch, Joseph Kalichstein and many others.  Besides the United States, he has also performed extensively in Europe and Asia, including the United Kingdom, Italy, France, Spain, Austria, Mainland China, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam and Japan. 

A native of Hong Kong, David Leung began receiving violin lessons from Mr. Tong Lung at the age of six.  In 1989 he was accepted to the Junior School of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and studied violin with Mr. Lo Chu-Tung.  He continued his studies in violin performance and chamber music in the studio of Professor Michael Ma and received a Bachelor Degree in music with first-class honor from the Academy in 2002.   As the concertmaster of the Academy Symphony Orchestra, he performed regularly as both soloist and leader, including three European tours in the summers of 1999-2001.  Leung holds a degree of Doctor of Musical Arts from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, where he studied violin performance with Professor Mikhail Kopelman and served as the teaching assistant.  He also holds a Master’s degree and receives the prestigious performer’s certificate in violin performance and literature from the Eastman School of Music, where he was the concertmaster of Eastman Philharmonia and Eastman Symphony Orchestra.
