The English department at Roberts provides a strong literary foundation by studying traditional literature, as well as opening the door of discovery to other interesting texts and poetry. Class discussion and sound teaching heighten this experience even further.

I believe the best thing about the English program is the balance between professors. Since each professor focuses on different types of literature and uses very different approaches to instruction, students are exposed to a broad spectrum of authors, genres, and teaching styles.

I'm currently doing my student teaching at West Irondequoit High School at the 10th grade level. I've found that the program at Roberts did a good job of preparing me for teaching. The Observation/Participation Experiences that we are required to do were very helpful and a great way to introduce us to the classroom experience. Another strength of the program is the professors. I not only enjoyed my time with both Prof. Decker and Dr. Hurley, but I learned an immense amount from both men. Their differences accent the literature they each teach. Dr. Hurley is a textualist while Prof. Decker is more of a poet. Both are extraordinary professors who have a passion for teaching as well as for literature.
