Comments from ALUMNI

Roberts Wesleyan did an excellent job in giving me the tools to be successful upon graduation. Because the school is a small to medium size college, there is a lot of one on one interaction with faculty and staff. This allows students the opportunity to obtain assistance if necessary. The faculty and staff are approachable and are available to the students.
One of the main reasons that I chose Roberts was the internship program. I knew that hands on learning and having experience would be an important factor in obtaining a job, along with learning in the classroom. Rochester offers several large corporations and many small to medium size companies that are willing to provide this hands on opportunity to Roberts Wesleyan College students. In my senior year at Roberts I was able to do two different internships, one in a not for profit organization and one in a for profit corporation. This allowed me to obtain experience in two different environments and then choose which one I thought was the better fit for me upon graduation. My internship experience not only helped me to obtain my first job out of college, but I also was hired by one of the companies where I interned a year later when there was an opening. Now I have had the opportunity to have interns come and work along side of me to obtain the same experience.

My experience as a Communication major at Roberts prepared me, not only for a career, but for life. I think that the greatest things that I gained during my years at Roberts were an appreciation for a wide range of views and ideas and a well-rounded education that truly gave me a wider perspective of life in general. I went to college because I thought that I would need to if I wanted to have any kind of career. I wouldn't trade the academic and life experience that I gained as a Communication major at Roberts for anything.

Communication is a very broad skill, so every job skill could not possibly be taught by one college. I was grateful, therefore, that Roberts focused on theory and basic ideas that could be applied to every situation. The Communication Program taught me to be flexible, how to apply my skills in a changing environment, and to think on my feet.
The program helped me both professionally and personally. It taught me a lot about people - not only interpersonal skills, but to value people. I learned not to look at an audience as a mass to be indoctrinated but to realize that each person is an individual and will receive and process information differently. I learned that each person needs to be respected as an individual.
The most valuable thing about the Communication Program - more valuable than even the courses - were the professors themselves. They brought a passion to the classroom both for the heritage of the discipline and for new fields of study. They were committed to understanding each student and helping each of us to succeed, not because it was their job but because they truly cared about us. They were excellent as mentors and at developing in us a passion similar to their own.

The Communication program at RWC helped to prepare me in so many ways for the future God had for me in helping to build His church. I appreciated the professors' insight, wisdom and concern for each student. The Communication degree opens up such a broad range of opportunities for graduates. The choice of a specific emphasis helps to create a unique program for each student, which will be a great asset in looking toward the future. For me, the Graphic Design emphasis led me to opportunities in the area of publications. My current position is an ideal match to my skills and interests in communication and the arts in the church. I owe much of this to the foundation laid by my education at Roberts Wesleyan College.

It has been nearly ten years since I graduated from the Communication Program from RWC. Since that time I have often been asked to define exactly what a communication degree is, and what it is good for. Although I can't speak for everyone, I know in my own life that this program prepared me in an incredible way for 'the real world'. In my opinion there is no stronger degree that can be obtained at the Bachelor level if you want to gain foundational writing and speaking skills - as well as enhance your knowledge of yourself and other individuals around you.
The Communication Program at Roberts Wesleyan College is both intense as well as rewarding. Thinking back I remember projects, papers and classes I never thought I would make it through - however, it was these very things that have helped me to succeed, professionally as well as personally. With the practical skills I received from the program I have been able to hold two supervisory positions, both in fortune 500 companies, as well as attend and complete graduate school in a complimentary field in order to obtain my 'ideal job.'
Despite all of this, I would not say the communication degree at RWC is right for everyone. If you are not ready to work hard and ask yourself difficult questions or if you want a degree where the learning ends at the end of class - the Communication Program isn't right for you. It is a degree program for those who like a challenge and want to come away from college differently than how they started - with practical skills as well as a personal knowledge of the strengths they possess that will help them succeed.

The Communication program at Roberts provided a strong framework in theory and allowed enough flexibility for me to pursue practical application situations. Under the advisement of communication faculty, I completed two internships that proved to be formative for future career goals. The program's integration with a liberal arts curriculum opened a world of possibilities. I was well prepared for a position that demands oral, written, and visual communication skills.
